His music casts a delicate warmth that combines both digital and analogue elements to create a sound that has inspired many artists over the years. With „Yara“, one of his most important albums to date will now be made available on CD for the first time. With a completely reworked and remastered version, Marsen Jules fulfills his wish to release this gem from the backcatalogue of the internet-label Thinner in a way it will get the attention it deserves. On his follow-up to „Lazy Sunday Funerals“, Marsen Jules continues to work on his vision of blending other-worldly strings with fragile ambient sounds. The resulting compositions are reminiscent of the deep, atmospheric sounds of the „Pop Ambient“ compilations on KOMPAKT, but in their minimalistic approach also pay respect to experimental composers such as Steve Reich and Eric Satie. The source material for „Yara“ was the recording of a band from the circle of Marsen Jules’ friends. After listening to it repeatedly, the background noises of the concert that were recorded accidently became more and more important for him: the tuning of an instrument, the opening of a beer can, the laughter of someone from the audience. Emotional moments that transcend the music itself and capture the very atmosphere of the concert. These acoustic fragments were afterwards digitally re-edited in the sense of musique concrète and then put together again to create a texture of elegant ambient sounds. The result is a highly personal sonic web of modulated loops and permanent tempo variations that influenced many musicians in their creative output. The re-mastered version of „Yara“ now impresses with an even richer, more complex sound than the original. Musikalisch sorgte er vor allem mit vielgelobten Veröffentlichungen seines Projektes Marsen Jules auf City Centre Offices und Autoplate sowie mit Beiträgen zur „Pop Ambient“ Serie auf Kompakt für aufmerksames Aufhorchen. Als krill.minima taucht er zudem immer wieder in exotisch knisternde Dub-Gewässer ein und zählt zu den Ausnahmekünstlern beim Vorzeige-Netlabel Thinner. Zudem betätigt sich Juhls aber auch als Veranstalter mit eigenem Festival für elektronische Musik und digitale Popkultur (Audiodigitale.de), als Netlabel-Aktivist (Thinner) und bekennender Musik-Futurist. Mit Oktaf gründet er nun sein eigenes Label. Eine Plattform für authentische Musik im Spannungsfeld von Ambient, Neo-Klassik und Modern Jazz, die sich vorrangig aus dem Schaffen des Künstlers selbst, sowie aus Kooperationen mit anderen Musiker bedienen soll. Zudem sind Compilations und gemeinsame Projekte mit namhaften Musikern geplant. Zum Labelauftakt greift Juhls gleich tief ins eigene Repertoire und bringt seine ersten beiden Alben „Lazy Sunday Funerals“ und „Yara“ erneut zu Gehör. Ursprünglich erschienen sie bereits 2003 und 2004 beim Internet-Label Thinner /Autoplate als kostenlose Downloads, waren jedoch bislang nicht mehr offiziell zugänglich. Für die jetzt erscheinende Wiederveröffentlichung hat Marsen Jules die originalen Soundfiles in vielen von Zigarettendunst verhangenen und Rotwein erfüllten Nächten noch einmal mit filigranem Feinsinn überarbeitet, die Arrangements aufs äusserste verdichtet und die Resultate im Mastering-Studio seines Vertrauens veredeln lassen. Hinzu kommen neue Artworks, gestaltet vom US-Designer Noah McDonald von KeepAdding, der zuvor bereits für Speedy J. und Funkstörung tätig war. In den acht Stücken von „Lazy Sunday Funerals“ führt Marsen Jules den Hörer durch ein atmosphärisches melancholisches Soundgewebe aus verdichteten Orchesterfragmenten. Dabei besticht Jules besonders durch ein feinsinniges Gefühl für das Zusammenspiel der Klänge und eine konsequente Reduktion auf den emotionalen Kern der Musik. Unter einem sanften Schleier aus Weißem Rauschen verschmelzen die romantischen Streicher-Glissandi und Filter verhangenen Akkorde zu fast statischen Klangbildern, deren stetige Bewegung sich erst bei genauerem Hinhören erschliesst. Durch seine endlos modulierenden Loops und ausgefeilte Tempoverschiebungen erzeugt Marsen Jules dabei den scheinbaren Eindruck von Kontinuität, während jeder Moment der Stücke einzigartig bleibt und keine Wiederholung findet. Ein zeitloses Ambient-Album, das die bewegende Intensität klassischer Kompositionen gekonnt in ein modernes atmosphärisches Soundgewand überführt.
